Even with her immense success, Nancy did not allow her love for music to overshadow her love for family. She and her husband, Presbyterian minister Wiley Burton, together found a balance between their home life and her career, making sure their children (two daughters from their union and a son from her previous marriage) had at least one parent at home at all times. Living out their own love song, Nancy and Wiley were married for 35 years until her husband’s death in 2008, following his battle with renal cancer. After experiencing multiple health issues of her own, Nancy retired in 2011 but the stories in her music still continue on. One thing I often think about is how glad I am to have known not just good music but great music, not just popular music but timeless music. As Nancy’s voice builds and eventually smooths out in “How Glad I Am”, she pulls you in and takes you on a ride much similar to the rollercoaster ride we experience in love. Nancy takes you there with each rise and fall of her voice as she speaks to the emotions in our hearts.
